Annex XI: Industry-based Biorefineries

The final report from this Annex is now available.

Annex XI has a multi-disciplinary approach to the concept of biorefineries integrated in industrial complexes, aiming at the optimization of energy efficiency in global terms. The approach is based on industry needs and application, combining the knowledge of industrial technologies with energy efficiency and biomass conversion processes. Different industrial sectors are considered, including the integration of bio – with oil refineries, together with CCS options yielding hydrocarbons/hydrogen, looking into technology and systems aspects for a better use of energy.

Annex XI was launched in 2008 and has developed with the objective of sharing knowledge and experiences, as well as conducting research assessment based studies and R&D projects to promote the industry-based biorefineries’ concept. Annex XI involves all IETS Member countries.

So far, activities have been implemented to reinforce international cooperation to structure partnerships that lead to optimization of energy efficiency in existing and new integrated industrial plants. Activities also include R&D on sustainability assessments, biofuels/bio-materials production technologies, and yields from thermo-chemical and biological conversion of biomass and waste materials.

Description of Annex

The Annex is divided into four tasks:

  1. Bioenergy & Biofuels,
  2. Biochemicals & New Fibre Materials
  3. Sustainability Analysis of Process Integrated Biorefineries.
  4. Process Integration of Gasification-based Biorefineries

The following R&D specific areas as opportunities for cooperation has been identified:

  • Sustainability studies
  • Process Integration for optimization of energy efficiency
  • Catalysis
  • Enzymes
  • Pyrolysis
  • Gasification
  • Carbon fixation for biodiesel production using microalgae

The program of work has been set up to improve international collaboration and to add initiatives related to one or more of the above mentioned areas. The Annex structure now consists of the four following projects:

  • BUGWORKERS - New tailor-made PHB-based nano-composites for high performance applications produced from environmentally friendly production routes
  • ALGAECASCAD - The biorefinery of Algae
  • Integrated Biofuel Production Processes Based on Systematic Optimization Methodologies
  • Process Integration of Gasification-based Biorefineries
